Roofing Shingle Calculator — Dumpster Size by Roof Squares

Asphalt shingles are heavy — roughly 250–400 lbs per square. A tear-off can blow past a dumpster trailer's weight limit before the trailer looks full. This calculator converts your roof's square footage and number of shingle layers into the right trailer size, so you avoid overweight fees and mid-job trailer swaps.

The rule of thumb

• Single-layer tear-off: ~1 cubic yard per 150–200 sq ft of roof.
• Double-layer tear-off: roughly double the volume.
• 14 yard ≈ 1,500–2,000 sq ft single-layer; 16 yard ≈ 2,000–2,500 sq ft.
• Always round up for hip roofs, which generate more waste per square.
